It is a very useful tool to visualize the actual IrDA communication traffic, translated into IrDA data packet frame structure, as well as the timing information, making debugging more effective and accurate.
It not only records IrDA data traffic but also the valuable timing information down to byte level which is shown in the LOG_PHY.TXT output file.
It does not decode or interpret OBEX or any layers above IrLMP layer, but all the information is preserved for you to read, e.g. Output LOG_LMP.TXT sample is an OBEX session.
It is a three-step process. Step one is to record the IrDA traffic. Step two is to translate the recorded data to text files. And step three is to view the text files. Each step has the associated software module to enable such functions.
The recorded data is written into a binary file LOG_RAW.BIN. This file can be analyzed and translated into text files.
You may use any editor or word processor to view the ASCII text files generated. These text files are almost self-explanatory.

This program is tested with Tekram IRMate-210 serial adapter under Windows 7 x64 and with Tekram IRMate-410U USB adapter under Windows XP. The most important part of LIRC is the lircd daemon which decodes IR signals received by the device drivers and provides the information on a socket. It also accepts commands for IR signals to be sent if the hardware supports this.
I plan to add support for IrDA compliant hardware with CIR support to LIRC in cooperation with the guys from The Linux-IrDA Project. Takahide Higuchi has already agreed to write an appropriate device driver. But development will not start before spring 1999. Each Hardware ID is assigned to a particular device by the device manufacturer. Windows operating systems such as Windows 11 use the Hardware ID to match to a specific INF file. INF files are used to install the correct device drivers - that's the software that lets your computer communicate with the device in the most efficient manner.
While a particular device driver is associated with specific Hardware ID, that driver may be compatible with other devices as well. In that case, the INF file would identify one or more Hardware IDs as an exact match, and provide a list of Compatible Hardware IDs for that driver. In many cases, the Compatible Hardware IDs will look similar, with the identifier having only minor variations, particularly in the Device ID portion.
